Honey, I'm Home

Greetings my children!  Have you missed me?  I sure missed being here, but I will say it was nice to take a break and venture out into the real world and play, and just for the record...bear slobber is really gross and leaves your hands slimy!  I also want to extend a HUGE thank you to Jenny for covering for me while I was away.  She did a great job and I'm glad she enjoyed diving into the world of music past, digging up the goodies and sharing them with you.  I promise that I won't be going anywhere for awhile, so you are stuck with me again, and I've very glad I didn't have to arm wrestle Jenny to get my column back...I so suck and arm wrestling and I would have lost. Well, enough of the prelims, let's get into the music shall we?

We do have a birthday today.  Born in 1949, Ric Ocasek of The Cars turns 60 today.  Growing up in the 80's, The Cars was one of my favorite bands, with Dangerous Type being one of my favorite songs by the group.  A very happy birthday to Ric!!

In 1985, my younger brother was 6 years old and the T-Ball King of Waynoka, Oklahoma.  In fact, when he would hit the ball, he would take his cap off, wave it at the crowd and run the bases backwards.  That same year, John Fogerty, formerly of CCR had his album Centerfield hit #1 on the US album chart.  To this day, my mom can't hear that song without thinking of McClain. "A-roundin’ third, and headed for home, it’s a brown-eyed handsome man"

While I was exposed to music from all different genres growing up, it has only been since I've been an adult that I've had an appreciation to some bands.  The Who is one of those.  It has taken me several years to really like their music and not just appreciate what they have given to the music industry.  If you have read or heard anything about Roger Daltery, you will know how amazing of an artist he really is.  In 1987, he contributed to The Lost Boys soundtrack with the song Don't Let The Sun Go Down On Me.
Now, let me clarify that THIS fact is NOT about The Who, Roger Daltery, or The Lost Boys.  I have said all of that to set the stage and let you know that while this fact is about that song, it is not his version that is the true focus.  His version is the one that I prefer over the release performed on this day, in 1991 by Elton John and George MichaelThe duo performed the song at Wembley Arena in London, and would release it as a single that would top the charts in both the US and the
UK.

There is a saying that goes, "Marriage is a great institution, but who wants to be in an institution." In 2002, Dusty Hill, bassist for ZZ Top and actress Charleen Chuck McCrory, his long time girlfriend, were married at Tony's Ballroom in Huston, TX before 200 guests.

Well, we have arrived at our final fact for the day.  In 1965, Paul Simon recorded an album that up to this point had never surfaced in America.  That lost album, The Paul Simon Songbook was officially released by Columbia/Legacy on this day in 2004.  It had previously been available only as an import and was long out of print.

Well, there it is, all laid out in a nice little row for you, free of bear slobber.  Again, it's great to be back in the saddle and I can't wait to see what is in store for tomorrow!
