March 2009, This Day In Rock
Friday the 13th and Other Horror Music
A look at music from the genre of horror films
Welcome to another Friday the 13th. A snowy, day as I type this, if you live anywhere near me, and I can honestly tell you that I'm not happy about that, as I am allergic to snow. I want to start off by letting you know that I will be gone all next week due to Spring Break, but never fear, Jenny is going to keep you company until I get back, and hopefully, spring will have shown up by then.
I've decided to take a little different twist for today's This Day in Rock. And instead of looking at facts that happened on this particular date, I wanted to take the date itself and centralize this article around it's theme. Friday the 13th....an other horror titles, and the music that goes with them.
Music is an intricate part of any movie as it sets the mood. A scene of a girl running through the woods, trying to escape the maniac who's planning on butchering her just wouldn't be the same without the eerie music to go with it. If you've ever watch "making of" clips to a movie, where it shows the scene as it was filmed without the music overlay, you'll know what I'm talking about.
Friday the 13th's theme is a great example of intense, eerie music to encompass the movie. And as soon as you hear it, you know which movie that it belongs to.
As each movie and it's monster is unique, so is the theme that accompanies that particular pairing. For example, when you think of Nightmare On Elm Street, you will not think of the theme from Psycho. The creepy harpsichord and scratchy chords and echoing slaps clue you right in as to which film you're watching.
Theme songs for horror flicks and their spoofs ring in our minds, and are just as memorable as the film itself, if not more so. And while there are movies that we have not seen, we will have heard and be familiar with their themes.
Rock music has always played an key part in movies. And when songs are aired on the radio, it will take us back to movies that they've been in. Doken is a prime example of this, as every time I hear the song Dream Warriors, I instantly think of Nightmare On Elm Street 3.
Take some time today to reminisce through your memories of horror movie music. Dig out the old VHS tapes, grab some popcorn and relive some of those great horror flicks or not so great horror flicks on this Friday the 13th. Lock the doors, don't answer the phone, and don't go to sleep. I hope to find you all safe and sound upon my return on the 23rd. Have a great spring break!
