February 2009, This Day In Rock
Motley Moments
Motley This!
In reading today's title, I'm sure that you assumed that today's column would be a Motley Crue fest, and while there are two facts that focus on the Crue, a lot of today's morsels deal more with the fact that motley means: 1. of many colors 2. of many different or clashing elements. And today's facts are without a doubt of many colors or different clashing elements rounding out a very motley day in rock indeed.
To kick today off, let's start with a couple of birthdays. Black Sabbath guitarist Toni Iommi turns 61 today. And just to throw a little icing on the cake fact for Toni, Black Sabbath's self-titled album was voted as the best British rock album every by Kerrang! in 2005. Kerrang! is a British weekly music magazine.
Our other birthday belongs to Daniel Adair, 3 Doors Down Drummer, who joined Nickelback in 2005. He turns 34 today.
Rock and Roll also suffered a loss in the year 1980. AC/DC front man Bon Scott died at the age of 33, the official cause of his death being listed as "acute alcohol poisoning" and "death by misadventure."
In 1974, KISS made their television debut on the TV show, Don Kirshner's Rock Concert, a music variety show that ran during the 70's and 80's, created and produced by Don Kirshner.
Ozzy Osbourne has never been one to be called normal. He's always been one to get a great shock response out of the parents of teenagers. 1982 was no exception when Ozzy, urinated on the Alamo. At the time of his arrest in San Antonio, Texas, Ozzy was wearing a dress. Maybe he was just trying to get in touch with his feminine side.....or maybe not.
Now, we come to the true MOTLEY portion of today's This Day in Rock. That's right, a couple of remember whens from none other than Motley Crue. In a Cancun beach ceremony, in which the bride wore a white bikini, Crue drummer Tommy Lee and Baywatch's Pamela Anderson joined in Motley matrimony in 1995.
Our other Motley moment takes us to the year 1997 in which the boys found themselves in a legal squabble when a fan sued the band for $7 Million for hearing loss after attending one of the Crue's concerts. February 19th would see victory for the band however, as the judge ruled in their favor, clearing them of responsibility as the fan knew the show would be loud when he bought the ticket.
And finally, 1999 brings us to another day in court, but with Marilyn Manson, in which the singer filed a defamation counter lawsuit against former Spin executive editor Craig Marks. In the month prior, Marks had filed a multimillion dollar suit against Manson, label Nothing/Interscope, and Manson’s bodyguard agency.
