Life After Rockstar:Supernova

Merriam-Webster defines supernova as:

     a.  The explosion of a star in which the star may reach a maximum intrinsic luminosity one billion times that of the sun.

     b.  One that explodes onto prominence or popularity; also; superstar

The first definition can be used when you take 3 mega stars and join them together in one band.  An explosion of talent that came together in the form of Gilby Clarke, Jason Newsted and Tommy Lee.  That band?  Supernova.

The second definition can be used when you take 15 singers and give them the chance to audition to front a montage of musicians already at scorching superstar caliber.  The result?  Rockstar: Supernova.

Following the form of the first season, the contestants chose the songs they would cover, fighting for the chance at times to share the stage with Gilby, Tommy, Jason or Dave Navarro.   Unlike season one, they also had the chance to rock a Supernova song with band starting during week 7.  Dilana Robichaux was the first contestant to be chosen for that honor.  Another striking similarity between the two seasons was that both times the final five came down to three men and two women, but in season two, a woman would crack the  final two.

In taking a look at life after Rockstar:Supernova, Road Crew Magazine brings to light the careers of Storm Large, Magni Asgeirsson, Toby Rand, Dilana Robichaux and Lucas Rossi.

storm #5 Storm Large

Although some of Storm's performances, such as her rendition of Gloria Gaither's I Will Survive, brought harsh criticisms from Supernova and Dave, (which in turn brought boos from the crowd), her sultry voice and her energetic stage presence took her all the way to the final five.  In week 10, she performed her original song Ladylike, which would hit #5 on Billboard's Hot 100.

While she didn't become the lead singer for Supernova, she was booked alongside fellow competitor Magni Asegirsson to be the opening act for Supernova's 2007 tour, but due to financial reasons, both she and Magni were cut from the bill.

Since the show, Storm has made an appearance on The Ellen DeGeneres Show, performed the Star-Spangled Banner both on the ESPN's The Contender and at NBA's Portland Trail Blazer's opening home game of the 2006-07 season.  She is also still rockin the stage with her band Storm and the Balls and can be found on her official website, myspace, and on facebook.

magni #4 Magni Asgeirsson

Magni Asgeirsson, aka Ice Man joined the Rockstar cast, leaving behind family and friends in his native country of Iceland to throw his hat into the ring and battle it out, trying to become the voice of Supernova.

With captivating covers of Coldplay's Clocks, Jimi Hendrix's Fire and a crowd pleasing original song entitled When The Time Comes, Magni fought his way into the final four before saying goodbye.  Upon returning home to Iceland, an estimated crowd of 8,000 people welcomed the singer home.

Today, Magni is signed with Spectra Records, fronting his native band, Á móti sól, who is currently working on their 8th album, and will be playing the 5th annual Bræðslan Music Festival the last weekend of July, '09.

toby #3 Toby Rand

Toby Rand took to the Rockstar stage becoming an instant favorite with the crowds and made huge impressions on Supernova as well.  The Australian singer brought electricity to the sets and made a native phrase "Evs", meaning "whatever", a household term.

Toby had the highest number of encore performances out of all of the contestants; week 2 with Somebody Told Me, week 9 with Rebel Yell, and in week 10 with his original song Throw It Away, in which he performed in the memory of the late Steve Irwin who had passed away that week.  But while his connection with the crowd was second to none, Toby would only reach third in the competition, to the disappointment of many.

Since the show, Toby has rejoined his native band Juke Kartel, who opened for Nickelback and Seether during their recent Australian tour as well as released their debut album, Nowhere Left To Hide, in April of 2009.

dilana #2 Dilana Robichaux

Dilana Robichaux took command of the rockstar stage, bringing her smoky vocals and a stage presence that was undeniably spectacular.  Unafraid to fight for songs she wanted, at one point during the competition she dared Toby to run around the pool naked for a song.  Toby in turn laid the same dare to her, in which she rose to the challenge for the song she was fighting for.

She captivated the judges, the crowd and the viewers week after week with her brilliant covers of songs like Nirvana's Lithium, The Cranberries Zombie, The Police's Roxanne and Tracy Bonham's Mother Mother.  But despite being a dominating factor, Dilana would only make it to the runner up position in the competition.

Since the shows end, Dilana is still rocking music lovers who are there for her with open arms.  In 2008, she signed with Hurricane Records and recorded her album Darklight.  Sadly, not only would the album not be released by Hurricane, Dilana herself was released from her contract due to the label shutting down.

Dilana keeps her fans updated through myspace, facebook, her official website, and twitter with posts about her upcoming shows and events and what's going on with her.

Her current single Hangover was released on June 9th, 2009 and can be found on iTunes.

lucas Rockstar: Supernova Winner Lucas Rossi

From it's season opener, to it's finale, one of the fan favorites worldwide was Lucas Rossi.  The Canadian singer never found himself in the bottom three, facing elimination until week 10.  He continued to gain praise from fans and supernova alike covering songs such as Bittersweet Symphony by the Verve, Creep by Radiohead and his original song Headspin.

At the show's finale, he stood side by side with Dilana awaiting the band's decision, who made the announcement they had to go with the fans, who gave the majority of the votes to Lucas.

I had the opportunity to ask Lucas a few questions about his life after Rockstar:Supernova.

Road Crew:  What was the transition like, changing from playing club type venues to arenas?

Lucas:  Awesome, I thought it was unbelievable to play for almost 7 thousand people a night. Quite overwhelming.

Road Crew:  What was it like touring and performing with such high caliber musicians like Tommy, Jason and Gilby?

Lucas:  It was rad and very humbling to say the least although Jason didn't not make the tour due to injuries. We had Johnny Clot play bass. He was the Black Crows bassist.  He was sooooo cool me and him became very close.

Road Crew: How did the end come for Supernova and who informed you the band was breaking up?

Lucas:  I wanted to move on and do my solo project"stars down" and explore different avenues.

Road Crew:  What direction did your career take once the bad was officially dissolved?

Lucas:  I started touring with my acoustic guitar because I thought it was very important to show the fans that i wasn't a one trick pony and I wasn't just the winner of a television show

Road Crew: Since Supernova, what has been your greatest challenge as a musician?

Lucas:  The biggest challenge has been maintaining my life as a musician. Paying my bills from constant touring , working at it everyday ,writing a song or two a day, trying to be the best every single day ,keeping tight with the fans and loving and respecting how much time they all take to love and support me always.  My fans rock big time :)

Road Crew: How did you go about putting together your current band Stars Down, and how did you come about the band's name?

Lucas: I met the fine gentlemen at a benefit concert for the voices of Uganda and we all hit it off. German Briseno, the bass player I knew prior to the benefit. The name means bringing yourself back to reality and and being lost in your own black hole or ego.  For me at least. Ha

Road Crew:  Do you have any current tour plans or CD release?

Lucas:  Soon, very soon.
