While out with Type O Negative and Seventh Void during the Halloween tour this past October, {Destrophy's singer} Ari sat down with Marcey and Jenipher to chat. He was gracious enough to give us an indepth look into the lyrics as well as the band, as Type O Negative conducted soundcheck at their Cleveland House of Blues show. We discussed their debut disc DESTROPHY, TNA wrestler Jesse Neal's theme song and who also stars in the video for, Reconnect, as well as their first single, The Way of Your World ~which is being played on Mtv2 quite often, and much more! There is sure to be big things in the future for this foursome. Do yourself a favor and make sure you grab the disc and/or check them out as soon as you get the chance, they do not disappoint! Music is the ultimate magic, allowing you to be entranced with a single note from a guitar.  Although we may have never heard of a particular artist or band, all it takes is one note, one lyric to magically transform our lives, transporting us from our reality to that of the musician(s) in question. 

This is what happened to me when I was first told about the opportunity I was given to interview Exit the Ride guitarist Bill Peck.  Here was a band and a musician that I had never heard of before, and it is very intimidating to try to come up with interview questions for someone you know nothing about.  Thus, the homework began.  I started checking out different websites with interviews and information and of course Bill's myspace where I was able to experience the magic of his guitar playing for the first time.  It was through this project that I was able to discover for myself and pass onto you, never stop looking for new bands and musicians to immerse yourself in.  Don't wait for someone else to say "have you heard this band?", step up, discover the bands for yourself and then you be the one to share them with others.

It is an honor to be able to feature Bill in this issue of Grinding the Axe, for he is truly worthy to be called an incredible axe grinder, and in my personal opinion, that is providing too modest of a description of such a stellar guitarist.

Road Crew:  Please tell our readers a little about yourself.

Bill:  I was born in Orlando, FL and I have lived here all of my life. I have been lucky and have been able to travel to different parts of the world being involved in the entertainment industry. I’ve performed with several music groups, solo, many times as a guest with Michael Angelo Batio for Dean Guitars, and appeared in instructional videos. Currently I am working with my band Exit The Ride performing often and gearing up for the release of several new guest appearances on CD and DVD.

Road Crew:  How long have you been playing guitar?

Bill:  I got my first guitar when I was 14 years old. It was an inexpensive acoustic guitar that my mother found in the classified section of the newspaper. I took a few lessons with the guitar and the teacher wanted to work on one string melodies like Mary Had a Little Lamb and I wanted to learn rock songs. So I made very little advancement as a player until I got my first electric at 15. I worked odd jobs for my father for $5 an hour and eventually saved up enough for a guitar and got a Washburn at a pawn shop and a Crate amp with a 12 inch speaker. I am 30 now so about 16 years!

Road Crew:  Who would you say is your greatest influence?
 
Bill:  Steve Vai was easily my greatest influence when I first started to develop more advanced guitar technique. I always liked his sound the most and his style to me seemed unique. Early on in playing days I was probably a little too influenced guitar wise and over the years I have tried to originate my own guitar style. I love Vai’s sound when he taps and plays in a legato style. I loved Van Halen and Randy Rhoads but Steve Vai challenged me to be more advanced with it.

Road Crew:  How did you hook up with Dean Guitars?

Bill:  Michael Angelo Batio first introduced me to the company and specifically the owner Elliot Rubinson. I had become friends with Michael thru meeting him with Mark Tremonti at NAMM in 2004. I was doing guitar things that were moving in the right direction at the time and was set to appear on his first Hand’s Without Shadows album. I live in Orlando so dealing with a company in Tampa was very appealing. I drove over and played a Vendetta model at their headquarters and liked the look and sound. There was not a whammy bar and I am a player that always plays with one. Elliot liked the idea to build one with a Floyd Rose and so they made me a black guitar. We replaced the pickups from the stock model and added the zebra style Michael Schenker pickups. I liked the guitar a lot but the neck was too thick for my wrist to be comfortable when playing a lot of notes. Elliot got me a few others with very thin V style necks and they are great guitars that I love. My favorite guitar from them is my white Vendetta that I used in the Mark Tremonti Fret 12 instructional DVD. I am very lucky to have a great relationship with a guitar company like Dean.

Road Crew:  You have been described as "a legato, tapping and whammy bar master."  How would you describe your playing style?

Bill:  That sound’s pretty good! Haha! I just try and play what I think are cool guitar licks and ideas and hope other people think so too. I have really tried to push my technique as much as I can and do new things with the guitar. I think that tapping with 3 with fingers while holding the pick and then integrating sweep picking at the same time is awesome. 2 handed legato harmonies are really cool too. The area of my playing that I have had the most advancement in recent years is hybrid picking and I am pleased that I made the effort to get proficient at that.

Road Crew:  How long has Exit the Ride been together and how did the band come together?

Bill:  Sam Stone and I have been working on Exit The Ride for about 5 years together and we have had a few different members on bass and drums. The current line up is really the first time that we have had things completely together member wise and our live show is finally where it needs to be. I am having a lot of fun with the band right now.

Road Crew:  How does the band's songwriting process work?

Bill:  Sam has really developed his songwriting skills over the years and has really grown in that area. Lots of ETR songs have started with a riff idea I have or Sam has brought in almost fully structured song ideas. When that happens, I work out guitar parts that are similar but more my own. I like having a guitar solo in every song. To me that is the style and era when rock music was at it’s best. We always communicate on where the solo is and try and make them fit in the song.

Road Crew:  Do you have any new projects in the work, with the band or solo?

Bill:  As a band we are trying to finish recording our first full length album and have it for sale. Getting a great quality recording that fully represents what you want your sound to be is tough and expensive. We are really close to finishing it and I am proud of the songs that are done. I have an appearance on Michael Angelo Batio’s new record Hand’s Without Shadow’s II and the track also features Mark Tremonti. I am obviously excited about this and it is an honor to have guitar buddies like them. I just had a few successful performances with Michael for Dean Guitars and those were thrilling. One other project that will be coming out from Fret12 is Troy Stetina’s Instructional DVD and I have a spot on it. Mark, Michael, Eric Friedman, and I do guest spots and Troy is a great teacher and player so it will be cool.

Road Crew:  When you are not playing or on the road, what do you like to do with your time?

Bill:  I enjoy spending time with my friends and family. I have a twin brother that I am very close with who lives in the condo community next to the one that I live in. We cook out and party in the Florida sunshine at the pool and lake where he lives and it is very relaxing. I go to Orlando Magic games a lot and am lucky to have a friend Larry Nieves that brings me and I sit courtside a lot. That is the best and it is like watching the NBA on a playground. I sat on the court for the NBA Finals Game 3 and that was totally surreal. I have part of a season ticket package with 2 friends also so I go a lot.

Road Crew:  What advice do you have for up and coming guitarists?

Bill:  Any guitarist should do everything they can to get better and be the best individual they can be. The music business is not the same as being an advanced player in your bedroom or friend’s house. Performing often and trying to earn a living at it is very tough. So have modest expectations financially and play for the art and enjoyment of it. If your lucky, it will reward you financially.

Road Crew:  What is something that you would like our readers to know about you that you haven't been asked before.

Bill:  What is it like to finish an Economics degree? Not a lot of fun! I am a musician that wants to be a well rounded individual so I am very much in favor of having other talents and interests. I feel lucky to have had parents that paid for my college tuition and I made the most of it. I feel more financially savvy than most musicians and money is important so that is a great thing.

If you've ever wondered why a close group of friends might like completely different types of music, blame their genes. A study by Nokia  into the musical tastes of nearly 4,000 twins reveals genetic influences on the music people like varies with genre.
While, on the whole, musical taste is determined just as much by nature as it is by specific individual experiences, nature's influence is strongest on appreciation of pop, classical and hip-hop music - indicating some people may be born to love Michael Jackson, Beethoven or Jay-Z.
Nature's influence is lowest on appreciation of folk and country, where family upbringing appears to play a role - so a CD collection full of Hank Williams, Dolly Parton and Joni Mitchell can't necessarily be blamed on genetics: Genre Nature's Influence Pop/classical/rap/hip-hop 53% Jazz/blues/soul 46 Rock/indie/heavy metal 40% Country/folk 24%
The study, conducted by Nokia and Kings' College London Department of Twin Research, investigated the listening habits of nearly 4,000 twins and looked at the influence of both genetic and environmental factors on musical taste.
"Previous studies have shown that perfect pitch ability appears to be partly inherent and with as much as 50% of our musical taste being predetermined, it appears there is a strong argument for the existence of 'music genes'" says Adrian North, Professor of Psychology at Heriot Watt University.
As might be expected, genetic influences decrease over time as individual experiences becomes more important. Excluding country music - on average for the under 50s, genes have more influence (55%)(1) than environmental factors (45%)(2) , whereas for the over 50s, the influence of individual specific environmental factors on a music collection increases to 60%(3).
Liz Schimel from Nokia commented; "Mobile phones are changing the way people experience music and, if we're to give music fans the music they want, we need to know what fuels their passions. While technology doesn't yet allow us to match DNA to playlists with Nokia Comes With Music service and millions of tracks in the Nokia Music Store, there's something for every gene."

Born to buy music, but not to listen to it
While genetic influence on the music we like (55%) is clear, genes have a significantly lower influence (25%) on our motivations for listening to music. According to the research, listening habits are influenced by a desire to soundtrack our day, wanting to set a mood, or simply to enjoy the listening experience rather than any 'play music now' gene.
The research was conducted amongst identical (MZ) twins and fraternal (DZ) twins. MZ twins share 100% the same genes, whereas DZ twins share half the same genes, just like ordinary siblings. Assuming the shared environment they grew up in is equally similar for MZ and DZ twins, it is possible to conclude that any greater similarity in musical taste between identical twins than non-identical twins is due to genetic influences.

When you hear the name Rob Halford you immediately think Judas Priest. As well you should! Halford has been given the title of the Metal God but, would you also associate his iconic metal figure with a Christmas album? Not a parody album, a serious, mind blowing, holiday album by the Metal God himself.

Well, it grabbed this metal heads attention. Just in time for the gift giving season, Rob Halford has released Winter Song, his first solo release in over seven years. It includes original tracks including, “Get Into The Spirit” and “When Christmas Comes For Everyone.” as well as Christmas classics such as “Oh Holy Night” and “Come All Ye Faithful” which are set to original arrangements.

Rob’s solo project is aptly named “Halford” and includes Roy Z and Mike Chlasciak on guitars, Mike Davis on bass, and Bobby Jarzombek on drums.

Whether you are a fan of Rob’s, Judas Priest, or just want to an incredible Christmas album to your holiday collection, I suggest you pick up this Winter Song.  It is immaculately played, beautifully written, and superbly sung by Rob…as always.

Powerman 5000 has released their 7th studio disc, brilliantly titled Somewhere on the Other Side of Nowhere. Keeping to their normal track record of spacing releases about two to three years apart, this is a perfect appendix to 2006's Destroy What You Enjoy. The 11 track disc has been described by {singer and founding member} Spider One as almost sounding like "footsteps of a giant robot" so much so that the robot theme seems to of taken over slowly. Recently in an interview with Road Crew Magazine , Spider discussed how the cover for the disc with the beheaded robot came about, as well as using robots in the video for the first single Super Villain.  

V is for Vampire was written long before the current craze, but would undoubtly be a huge success for the band if released as a single. It is a song, much like the undead, that has something powerful about the riff that draws you in and before you know it you will be singing along to the chorus, almost as if you are inviting the vampire in.

Horror Show is a funky song that Spider raps instead of sings thru out. Nothing new to veteran PM5K fans. {Throw your hands in the air, this is a robbery/And release the bats in fact I think they're on to me/Your pretty face is going to hell/That's what Iggy Pop said before they learned how to sell/Fake rebelion, you're not hellion, you're not E-V-I-L/I can tell from the smell of the burning rockstars/That are stacked up in piles/So take a picture and don't forget to smile}

Overall this is a great rock album. Heavy on the synth, guitars and industrial techno grooves at times definately give it that science fiction feel. A song or two could even blend smoothly onto a dance floor. The vocals go from growls to rapping to all out singing.  Just when you think you know whats coming next ~ Velkro, Evan9, X51, GFLash and Spider One seem to switch it up just enough to keep you from getting bored. This is one of those discs you can play over and over from start to finish.

I do not think I will be argued with when I say Trans-Siberian Orchestra is truly one of the most ingenious bands to ever hit the music scene.  And while they are most widely known for their three Christmas CDs, they also have two non-seasonal discs that are nothing short of amazing.  Beethoven's Last Night and the newly released Night Castle.

I have been waiting for Night Castle's release ever since the last time I saw TSO in concert and got a taste of some of the bonus songs live about three years ago.  Of course, I didn't know the story line, but at the time, I honestly didn't care and came home with a Night Castle jewelry box which sits on my desk, next to my laptop and holds my pencils.

When I told my mom, who is also a huge TSO fan that Night Castle had finally been released, she bought a copy for each of us and gave me mine under the condition that I was to read the entire storyline first.  Usually, when I obtain a TSO CD, I read the story while listening to the music, but I promised my mom that I would read first and listen second.  Now, I am a total bookworm, so if I have the opportunity to read....I'm there.  So, this morning, with coffee in hand, I sat in the quiet hours and read the story of Night Castle.  I found myself transported into the story and could vividly see each scene unfold.  I could smell the salt of the sea and the smoke from the bonfire.  I could feel the sand beneath my feet.  I experienced the joy of first love and physical anguish of the solider.  I could feel the internal and emotional conflict of the general.  I could fee the wonder of the little girl and see the snow white wings of the falcon.  All of this before I ever heard the first note.

The music of TSO can not be compared to that of anything or anyone else.  In my personal opinion, they are their own genre.  They are THE rock orchestra.  Their sound ranges from such simplicity to extreme complexity.  Night Castle is no exception.  When I put disc 1 into my stereo, I felt the same type of elation I have felt at different theatrical productions I have been to, such as Phantom of the Opera and Wicked, as well as the energy that is unleashed from concerts I have attended that have killer guitar, such as Motley Crue or Def Leppard.  As the musicality is consistent throughout the story of Night Castle and as the plot ebbs and flows, so do the songs.  At times very gentle, then surging into a strong, climactic piece that takes you to the very brink of your emotions.  Each song wraps you up into the different characters joys, struggles, internal conflicts, revelations, bringing you at last to completion.

Night Castle gives you ultimate sacrifice, ultimate redemption, ultimate revelation.

On this day in 1968 "Love Child " by The Supremes was a number one hit.

Simon And Garfunkel's first television show hits the waves on this day in 1969.

"Hi Hi Hi" Is released by Paul McCartney & Wings in 1972. It would eventually go to the #10 position in the US but it would take nearly a year.

In 1974 "Best Of My Love" Is released by The Eagles. It would go on to be their first #1 single.

On this day in 1991 The Billboard Hot 100 started using radio airplay as a way of determining chart placement.

On this day in 2001 a legend passed on, George Harrison passed away while at a friends home in London. He was 58 years young. although he had been battling cancer it came as a shock to the world. he is still missed by many.Below is one of his later releases.

Kid Rock and the Twisted Brown Trucker Band will bring their unique blend of Southern rock, soul, country, heavy metal and hip hop music to American service members and their families this holiday season when they headline Tour for the Troops 2009, formerly known as Operation Season's Greetings.

Kid Rock and his band will entertain American troops in Southwest Asia and families in Europe Nov. 30 to Dec. 12.

Joining them will be comedian Carlos Mencia, singer/songwriter Jessie James, and members of the U.S. Air Forces in Europe Band and the Band of the Air Force Reserve.

The Tour for the Troops features performances at Ramstein Air Base, Germany; Incirlik AB, Turkey; RAF Lakenheath, England; and a number of deployed locations in Southwest Asia.

Kid Rock, known for his patriotism and fervent support of our troops, has been overseas four previous times to entertain the troops; this will be the first time he will be bringing his full band. Kid Rock has sold more than 25 million albums in the United States since releasing his first album in 1990, and is one of the hottest artists on today's music scene. His 2007 album "Rock and Roll Jesus" went triple platinum in the United States and sold more than 5 million copies around the world. Fans of multi-platinum power rockers CREED are in for a special treat this Holiday Season as CREED LIVE, the first-ever live DVD from one of the most successful bands of the past decade, hits stores and all major online retailers on December 8, 2009, the day after its nationwide theatrical screening in movie theaters.

CREED LIVE, captured during the band’s long-awaited “Full Circle” reunion tour, includes every favorite track a Creed fan would want, including “Higher,” “My Sacrifice,” “With Arms Wide Open” and “Bullets” plus new songs such as “Overcome” and “A Thousand Faces” from Full Circle, the band’s first studio effort in seven years. Orange County hardcore band Bleeding Through, preparing to enter the studio to record its sixth studio effort, will be hitting the road in the New Year for an overseas tour with Machine Head. The Black Procession Tour will also include Hatebreed, and All Shall Perish.

Five brand new U.K. and Irish dates have just been announced on the trek. Fan presale links for tickets will be made available on Wednesday, November 25 and general public ticket sales begin on Friday, November 27.

Drop Dead Rock stars '80's music icons Adam Ant and Deborah Harry. This film festival favorite played the art house circuit when it premiered in 1995. It was written by Ric Menello and Adam Dubin, the creators of the Beastie Boys classic music video Fight For Your Right To Party. Drop Dead Rock was directed by Adam Dubin who recently directed comedian Lewis Black's concert film Stark Raving Black.
 
"I wanted to make a 60's movie about an 80's rock star in the 90's," said Dubin.
 
Drop Dead Rock is a no holds barred, rock and roll comedy. A down and out, rock n' roll band, Hindenburg, kidnap their favorite British rock star, Spazz-O, and hold him hostage. Legendary group Bon Jovi caps the celebration of their 25th year on record with a second consecutive #1 Soundscan debut - as their 11th studio album THE CIRCLE (released November 10th) sails into the top spot on first week sales of 163,000 copies.

The Chicago-based The Last Vegas will be hitting the road with Papa Roach and Smile Empty Soul.  The run with rock powerhouse Papa Roach begins on November 25 through November 29 with the Smile Empty Soul tour picking up in December (please see tour dates below).  The Last Vegas, dubbed the “Best Discovery” by SPIN, have quickly built an impressive touring history throughout arenas, clubs and theaters in 2009, which includes Mötley Crüe, Buckcherry, Hinder, Theory of a Deadman and now Papa Roach and Smile Empty Soul.
 
The band will shoot the new video for “Whatever Gets You Off” in Los Angeles on November 19.  The album of the same name was released in April and includes “I’m Bad,” the track Billboard described as a combination of “rock, glam and garage for an ass-kicking sound. Vocalist Chad Cherry’s snarly, sexy delivery makes you want to reach for the stripper pole, and infectious rhythms and thrashing guitar riffs add the right amount of sleaze. No doubt, rock’n’roll is here to stay in ’09.”
 
Whatever Gets You Off is scheduled for release on vinyl on January 19, 2010 and The Last Vegas will be hosting an in store event at Rolling Stones Records in Chicago.  The album was recorded in Los Angeles with veteran rock producers Nikki Sixx of Mötley Crüe and Sixx:A.M., DJ Ashba (Sixx:A.M., Mötley Crüe) and Marti Frederiksen (Aerosmith, Mötley Crüe, Ozzy Osbourne) after beating out over 8,000 entrants and being hand-picked by Mötley Crüe as part of Guitar Center’s On-Stage program in 2008.

Jodie Wilson, the creator of GRIM DAYS, has spent close to 20 years in the music industry, working for power-house bands such as Rob Zombie, Powerman 5000, Audioslave, Jurassic 5, and Monster Magnet. Wilson took a break from the music industry in 2007 and spent a year working with world renowned artist/designer, Paul Frank on his new design company, Tree Stitch Design.  After the year spent with Paul Frank, Wilson was more inspired to continue her work and has now allotted time to work on her labor of love – GRIM DAYS – based on her own dog Grimley, a rambunctious Boston Terrier full of piss and vinegar.

In 1974 ABBA starts their first tour outside of Sweeden in 1974.

On this Day in 1990 David Crosby is involved in a motorcycle accident breaking several bones.

On this day in 1959 The Fleetwoods topped the chats with "Mr. Blue"

On this day in 1960 Patsy Cline was in the Studio recording "I Fall To Pieces". I was surprised to find that this song only went to #12 I really thought it had climbed higher.

In 1968 "Hooked On A Feeling" by BJ Thomas Is released. It would go on to the #5 spot on the charts.

In 1974 John Lennon had his one and only #1 hit outside The Beatles called "Whatever Gets You Through the Night".

On this day in 1978 "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band" opens in theaters. Sadly it was a Box office flop.

On this day in 1988 a former manager for The Beach Boys named Stan Love Was handed 5 years of Probation for embezzling hundreds of thousands of dollars from the band.

Palm Springs, California Dedicated a life size statue of Sony Bono where he was once Mayor in 2001.

Ace Frehley announced he will join this Sunday’s Battle Of The Bands for Rock N Roll Fantasy Camp’s showcase finale of the graduates of the 3-day camp. Frehley will hit stage and jam with the campers as they battle it out to be the top campers of 2009! Frehley will also be a headlining guest counselor November 18^th for the 5-day camp that follows this Sunday’s showcase.

RRFC is thrilled to welcome Laura Roppe, cancer survivor to gain her life-long dream of recording her music and singing. “Keep A Breast Foundation was completely blown away by Laura's story and we are delighted to select her to go to Camp on November 17- 22,” explains Amanda Nixon, advocate. RRFC will sponsor the fee’s and support her dream that almost slipped away~

Roppe’s story runs deep starting with a career as an Attorney, turned singer joining the music industry and the moment she was about to move up, she was diagnosed with triple negative breast cancer. Her world spun out and changed for the next year. Her story is compelling – here is an excerpt from her initial letter she wrote to us~

“My name is Laura - I just turned 39 this month.  I was diagnosed with Triple negative breast cancer in October 2008.  -- A rare form that strikes young women.  Only 10 percent of breast cancers are triple negative, and it is very, very aggressive.  I literally just walked in from my first MRI since having surgery, chemo and radiation treatments for this entire past year.  I am awaiting the results right now, trying to keep it together . . . and there is your email.

Let me tell you why you might pick me (though I wish that every survivor of cancer could be given the opportunity to experience such a dream come true).  Just yesterday, I was talking to my kids about what they want to be when they grow up.  They are two girls, ages 9 and 7.  One of them said a teacher and one said a writer.  "What did you want to be when you were a kid, mom?" They asked me.  And I answered immediately, "A rock star."

Now that childhood dream will come true for Roppe, as she emerges into the musical realm with the counselors at the camp. Roppe’s bravery and cheery disposition is a true inspiration for all women and cancer victims alike. We Are The In Crowd, the four-piece band from Poughkeepsie, NY, formed earlier this year and newly signed to independent label Hopeless Records, will have its current single, “For The Win” featured on tonight’s episode of MTV’s “The Hills”, with repeats airing throughout the weekend.

The band, made up of Tay Jardine on vocals, Jordan Eckes on guitar and vocals, bassist Mike Ferri and drummer Rob Chianelli, used its talent and ingenuity to propel themselves into the hearts of many. Instead of relying on image and sugar-coated, meaningless lyrics, We Are The In Crowd focused on one goal.  “We really try and tell a story,” says Jardine.

Call The Cops, winner of the “Rock the Space” contest awarding a record contract with MySpace Records, will open for Sugarcult at the band’s seventh annual Toys for Tots benefit concert December 17 at the Anaheim House of Blues.

The Long Beach, CA electro-rock outfit round out a supporting bill that also includes Hollywood glam rockers Primadonna (fresh off a tour with Green Day), and OC indie buzz band Venus Infers.

According to Sugarcult guitarist Marko DeSantis: “We've always carefully selected each opening band so they represent upcoming bands we personally love. Primadonna, Call The Cops, and Venus Infers will be making headlines in 2010, so make sure to show up early and check 'em all out!”

Tickets for the Toys for Tots benefit are on sale now.

Call The Cops, winner's of Myspace's "Rock the Space" competition, beating out 18,000 other unsigned acts, won a recording contract with MySpace Records back in September.

Hailing from Long Beach, California, Call The Cops officially came together in December 2008 and has already released a six-song EP titled

Triple GRAMMY® Award winning guitarist Steve Vai will be the featured guest on VH1 Classic's "That Metal Show" on Saturday, November 7 at 11PM. For fans outside the U.S., it will be available online shortly after it airs.

Vai will be speaking about his new concert film WHERE THE WILD THINGS ARE: LIVE IN MINNEAPOLIS (WTWTA), which just debuted at #4 on Billboard® Magazine's Top Music DVD Chart. The film, released by Vai's record company Favored Nations Entertainment, hit retail September 29 (a companion live audio CD came out that day as well). The Blu-ray edition will be in-stores November 10, and an online preview is available at: www.vai.com/wildthings.

Later this month, Vai will have the honor of performing the National Anthem at the New York Knicks game at Madison Square Garden in New York City on Sunday, November 29. Of the experience, he says, "Being a native New Yorker, it's a thrill for me to play the 'Star Spangled Banner' at the Knicks game at Madison Square Garden. 2010 will mark Vai's 30-year touring anniversary. He first stepped into the spotlight in 1980 as a guitarist in Frank Zappa's band. WTWTA was filmed and recorded at the historic State Theatre in Minneapolis, MN before a sold-out crowd during Vai's acclaimed 2007 String Theories World Tour. With his out-of-this-world vocal range and unique musical style, Adam Lambert is the ultra-glam, rock superstar that has America hooked. On Monday, Nov 23, Adam will unleash one of the most highly anticipated debut albums, "For Your Entertainment," on 19 Recordings/RCA. The record garnered contributions from such innovative artists as Lady Gaga, P!nk, Muse, Justin Hawkins formerly of The Darkness and Rivers Cuomo of Weezer.

Millions of fans watched Lambert's stunning performances on the eighth season of "American Idol" and now those millions of fans are waiting for the release of the album and Adam's first single, which Adam introduced on Ryan Seacrest's radio show Oct. 30. "For Your Entertainment" was written by Claude Kelly ("Circus" by Britney Spears) and Dr. Luke ("I Kissed A Girl" by Katy Perry and "Girlfriend" by Avril Lavigne, "Right Round" by Flo Rida, along with multiple singles by Kelly Clarkson) and produced by Dr. Luke.

"I feel so lucky to have been granted true opportunity to work with some of the top producers and writers in popular music," Says Adam. "This album is a reflection of their genius and the collaborative energy that they were gracious enough to share with me."

The credits on Lambert's first album read like a list of the hottest artists in the music business. Lady Gaga, long cited as a major influence on Adam, c-wrote the track "Fever" with producer Jeff Bhasker. P!nk is a co-writer on "Whataya Want From Me," along with Sweden's Max Martin and Johan Shellback. Matthew Bellamy, of the British prog rock/eletronica band Muse, one of Adam's favorite groups, wrote "Soaked."

Justin Hawkins, who was lead singer of the acclaimed British quartet the Darkness, wrote the lead track on the album, "Music Again." Rivers Cuomo, co-founder, lead singer and principal songwriter for Weezer, is one of the writers on "Pick U Up," along with Lambert and Greg Wells ("I Do Not Hook Up," Kelly Clarkson).

There are other stellar names featured in the credits on Adam's debut release. Rock goddess Linda Perry, responsible for hits like "Beautiful" by Christina Aguilera and "Get The Party Started" by P!nk, is the writer and producer of "A Loaded Smile." Ryan Tedder of OneRepublic, whose credits include "Bleeding Love" for Leona Lewis and "Halo" for Beyonce, wrote and produced "Sleepwalker."

Adam co-wrote four of the songs on his album. In addition to "Pick U Up," Adam penned "Strut" with Greg Wells and "American Idol" judge Kara DioGuardi; "Aftermath" with Alisan Porter, Ferras and Ely Rise; and "Broken Open" with Wells and Evan Bogart (whose credits include "S.O.S." by Rihanna and "Jai Ho! (You Are My Destiny)" from "Slumdog Millionaire."

Four of the tracks on "For Your Entertainment" are produced by Rob Cavallo, the A-list producer who has worked with Green Day, My Chemical Romance, David Cook, Alanis Morisette, Chris Isaak, Paramore, Jewel, Shinedown and Dave Matthews Band. Cavallo produced "Music Again," "Soaked," "Sure Fire Winners" and the bonus track, "Time For Miracles," from the soundtrack to the new motion picture, "2012."

One day before "For Your Entertainment" goes on sale, Adam will sing the title track on television for the first time, appearing on "The American Music Awards" on ABC-TV on Sunday, Nov. 22. He will give a special live concert performance on ABC-TV's "Good Morning America" on Wednesday, Nov. 25, "Late Show With David Letterman" that same night on CBS and will pre-tape on Nov. 23. The roaring sounds of vintage metal blended with modern rock are on display throughout 'Hafnium' - the third release overall by the Pennsylvania-based outfit, Slik Helvetika, and their new video, for the lead-off single, "Wide." 

"..And now the science paper: Hf/Hafnium is within a periodic element group of science that has some unique characteristics regarding molecular structure, occasional radioactivity and sorts of morphing states," explains Slik Helvetika's singer/guitarist Mikhall Myers. "It's discovery, and the studies of it's properties challenged Albert Einstein and top scientists to start thinking in new directions about alternate universes and incorporating further theorization on life and death states, and continually questioning, "What is time?" The HAFNIUM concept also tied in with some overwhelming feelings I felt when I lost my father - [which is what the title track is about]. It seemed as though his energies were within me as much, or more than when he was alive, hence the mark we leave on time stays here strong even after we are gone. So, do we really go away at all, or are we still existing in each past moment individually and situations we created in this consciousness as we know it? Is that possibly what a ghost is? Do we really ever die or are we still existing in a different plane of consciousness and could this be what religion calls heaven? How's that for a heavy element?!"

Myers also offered to discuss the background of their new ass-kicking video clip. "What is 'Wide' about? I was on some nutso sick adrenaline rush roller coaster, and I noticed most people were shitting their pants and had their eyes closed when it got to be too much, and I my eyes got wider open the crazier the ride got. Same is life. When you live on the edge there is a fine line between living at the max and capsizing. This song seemed to capture both the diabolical over the top energy as well as the whole catchy anthem motif. Shot at Mik's house, so he couldn't be late for the shoot!"

While Myers is the group's undisputed leader, he is joined in the band by two other rock steady musicians, bassist Kjell Benner and drummer Mark [Truk] Bennett, both of which provide a killer rhythm section to Myers' red hot guitar work. Myers: "'Hafnium' really showcases the band with way more mature songwriting, and with more diversity - without sounding like a different band. It features different grooves, a broader selection of instrumentation, and more soul. The debut was a lot more like driving '80s metal melody and ripping guitars 24/7." And how does Myers feel Slik Helvetika fit in with the modern metal scene? "Slik Hel's music has that cool bottom-end groove and rhythm that a lot of the new metal features.but merges a lot of the melody from the '70s, '80s, and '90s that some people are starting to miss. We don't rap or cookie monster growl through all the verses and wait for the chorus for the hook...we're giving you melody and energy through the whole song."

This is especially evident on such standout tracks as "Burnt" and "Heal Me," while Myers has a few personal favorites. "We have to really like the songs for them to be on the album to start with, so these are our favorite 10 out of 20. But if I have to pick some, "Money Tree," because it grabs you right away with hooks everywhere. It comes off a lot heavier and guttural when we play it live - it's about sex and if you are gonna be cheesy, this is the way to do it! "Hafnium" was a favorite right away - it is an epic song and gut wrenchingly emotional for me, since it's written about losing my father and it seems to translate to the listener as well. Also, fan reaction to "Reign" during the shows leads me to believe it is a favorite among listeners." And it shouldn't be long until fans can experience Slik Helvetika live on a concert stage, as their plan for world domination is to play "As many festivals, tours, and shows as we can get." With the release of 'Hafnium,' Slik Helvetika gives this scientific structure a whole new meaning of heavy.

A Great Piece of Rock & Roll History, what the New York Times called a “Jubilant Piano Summit,” and People Magazine chose as the “Pick of the Week” when it premiered in July of 1986, is finally available on DVD. This musical treasure was missed by the major companies; they ignored an incredible night of music magic. Producer David McBurnett has taken control of his original Masters to ‘Fats Domino and Friends’, a live concert shot at New Orleans’ famous Storyville nightclub. He and his partner Rick Lazes have re-released the show on DVD and made it available at their web site: www.FatsAndFriends.com.

A major recording artist since the release of his first album in 1967, the legend that is Leonard Cohen has had a revival of religious proportions during the past few years. After spending the best part of the previous decade living in a monastery and meditating 12 hours a day, music's most eloquent poet rose again in the late noughties, and in the process grabbed a whole new fan-base from generations barely aware of his huge body of work up to that point.

This book tells Cohen's entire, fascinating story. From his years growing up in Quebec in a middle class Jewish family, through a decade as a budding poet and author - following the publication of his first collection in 1956 - his relocation to NYC and entry into the world of folk and rock [at the age of 37] and his successful career as a singer-songwriter whose own recordings have regularly competed with versions by other vocalists. The story continues through the Cohen revival and the wholly unexpected position he found himself in, in December 2008, when 2 cover versions of the song with which this book shares a title competing for the coveted UK Christmas Number one single spot. The book goes on to include details of his newest material - his first for a decade - currently being recorded alongside more live performances.

This work includes many new interviews with key Cohen associates, brand new research and the most updated material available. 

Leonard Cohen has attracted a completely new generation of fans over the past two years, thanks to some high profile UK gigs at the O2 and at summer festivals [including a stunning Glastonbury appearance in July '08].

He achieved his first credit as a top 10 composer in December 2008 in style, when his song 'Hallelujah' occupied both the UK's Christmas Number One and Number Two spots in different versions.

There has not been a new Leonard Cohen biography published since 1998.

Hard Rock International is teaming up with several top musicians and bands for its 2009 global Imagine There's No Hunger campaign to benefit WHY, a nonprofit organization that strives to fight against hunger and poverty in America and around the world. On Monday, November 9, 2009, Imagine There's No Hunger will kick off at Hard Rock Cafe New York with a star-studded Red Carpet and Benefit Concert, headlined by Artist Ambassadors O.A.R., also featuring a performance by singer/songwriter Arno Carstens. Breathe Electric is wrapping up time in the studio where the Chicago band has been recording new tracks. Their next single, “Electronic Lover” will be available via iTunes in the next few weeks.

Gearing to tour throughout the rest of the year, the band kicks off a slew of club dates beginning Halloween at Mojoe’s in Orland Park outside Chicago. On November 15 in Seattle, the band will hit the road with Brokencyde and The Ready Set, followed by dates as direct support for Jeffree Star beginning December 2 in Baltimore.

Breathe Electric was formed in 2007 as the brainchild of Grant Harris. The electro-pop outfit released its self-produced debut EP Honestly and quickly gained momentum with extensive touring playing alongside bands like Never Shout Never, The Secret Handshake, and Automatic Loveletter, in addition to dates on this past summer’s Vans Warped Tour transforming each show into a non-stop dance party.

In a sudden and unexpected move, multi-platinum hard rock artist Rob Zombie has inked a new worldwide deal with leading rock label Roadrunner Records through its Loud & Proud imprint.

This shocking announcement comes as Zombie exits his former label and of eighteen years, where he sold fifteen million records as a solo artist and with his former band White Zombie.  Zombie’s new album, Hellbilly Deluxe 2, previously set for release on 11/17 will now be released by Roadrunner / Loud & Proud Records in early 2010. 

“It certainly wasn’t an easy decision to make after all this time, but it had to be done,” states Zombie. “I love this new record and wanted to surround myself with an excited new group of people who can reignite my enthusiasm for working within a hard rock record label. Roadrunner seems to be the perfect place.”

The Pixies - Black Francis, Kim Deal, Joey Santiago and David Lovering - have been confirmed to appear on "The Tonight Show with Conan O'Brien" this Friday, November 6. The show airs on NBC at 11:30PM ET/PT and 10:30PM CT.   At the special request of the show's producers, the band will perform one of their most beloved songs, "Here Comes Your Man," recorded for their classic 1989 album, Doolittle.

In celebration of the 20th anniversary of the release of Doolittle, the Pixies will kick off the 22-date U.S. leg of their worldwide "Doolittle Tour" tomorrow with the first of three sold-out shows at the Hollywood Palladium.  On this tour, the Pixies are performing all of the songs from Doolittle and its related B-sides, "Weird at My School," "Dancing the Manta Ray," and "Bailey's Walk" among them.  Doolittle, the band's third album and the first to chart on Billboard's album charts, includes classics such as "Debaser," "Wave of Mutilation," "Hey," "Gouge Away," and "Here Comes Your Man."

The "Doolittle Tour" launched on September 30 in Dublin, Ireland, and played sold-out shows everywhere - Scotland, Frankfurt, Amsterdam, Brussels, Paris, and to 20,000 fans over four nights in London.  The "Doolittle Tour" has also received rave notices - five-star reviews in the [London] Times, the Guardian, and the Independent, which also said, "...no band has pulled off a one-album show as triumphantly as the Pixies did here with a 20th anniversary performance of their 1989 masterpiece Doolittle."

The Boston-formed Pixies have been acclaimed as the most influential pioneering band of the late '80s alt/rock movement.  Their five studio releases and six years together effectively blazed the path for groups like Nirvana, Radiohead, and Pearl Jam to rise to superstardom.  They disbanded in 1993 and launched their reunion tour in April 2004 when virtually every, single date sold out within minutes and fans traveled hundreds of miles to attend a show.  In post-Pixies years, Black Francis has enjoyed a successful solo career as Frank Black, Kim Deal went on to form the Platinum-selling band the Breeders, Joey Santiago started the band The Martinis and has carved a career as a music composer for film and TV, and David Lovering performs as a magician and continues to drum.  The U.S. "Doolittle Tour" will be the band's first American trek since 2005.

Los Angeles based rock band Something To Burn has released their debut album Transitions. From beginning to end it has something for the rocker in all of us. Say Goodbye, the first single off the album really brings all the band has to offer. Intense vocals and powerful lyrics mixed with fast pounding percussion and rockin guitars. This song by far is my favorite on the album. You can hear their mellower side on the song Below that talks about heartbreak and loss. And if that isn't enough for you, Start Again touches on the bands darker side with a much heavier sound and vocals to match. This band has taken what could have been an ordinary album and mixed it into something extraordinary. You can put this album in your player of choice, listen to it many times over and not be disappointed.

Something To Burn are Jimmy Norman on guitar, twin brothers Shawn Ballard on drums and Jeff Ballard on Bass and Greg Wayne on Vocals. They played their way through the Hollywood clubs and were finalists in Guitar Center's "Tour With Motley Crue" contest, but were disqualified when it was revealed that they had sighed a recording contract with Scott Weiland's label Softdrive Records. Through it all, the band has remained resilient and you can catch them on tour with Stone Temple Pilots starting in 2010.

'80s alternative rock has gone down in the history of music as one of the most fertile and influential musical movements ever - as judged by the amount of notable bands that would subsequently "follow the leaders." And one of the leading lights of the movement was unquestionably Hüsker Dü. After the group's split, drummer Grant Hart moved out front with guitar in hand, and also handled lead vocals on his solo releases. But Hart has spent the last few years working on Hot Wax.
 
Joining Hart on the disc is a diverse cast of musicians from Godspeed You Black Emperor, Silver Mt. Zion, and Rank Strangers with the tracks being recorded in both Montreal and Minneapolis. Hart explains:
 
"The song 'Narcissus, Narcissus' is my first attempt at combining ancient Greek mythology and American rock-a-billy. By merging those influences with an ice cream truck atmosphere I think I have found a style that defines this period of my career. 'You're the Reflection of the Moon on the Water' is one of the most organic rock and roll songs that I have ever written. It's style owes a lot to my devotion for Patti Smith. It was inspired by a comment made by a monk during the selection process to find the next Panchen Lhama, who said of one candidate, 'He is the reflection of the moon on the water but he is not the moon'."
 
As a member of Hüsker Dü (which also included singer/guitarist Bod Mould and mustachioed bassist Greg Norton), Hart played on such all-time alt-rock classics as 1984's Zen Arcade and 1985's New Day Rising, while constantly criss-crossing the U.S. with legendary explosive live shows. Since Hüsker Dü's split in 1987, Hart has sporadically issued solo releases, and was also spotted as a member of the group Nova Mob. He has found a place and function in visual and dramatic art forms as well. Hot Wax will be Grant's sixth solo release overall.
